Impumelelo, the Stellenbosch Academy for Social Innovation, in partnership with the Distell Development Trust, is inviting applicants to apply for the 2016/17 Impumelelo Awards

Every year, around 20 evaluators visit more than 100 projects across the country to evaluate projects that have applied for the award, thus attracting some of South Africa’s best models of excellence finding solutions in sectors such as healthcare, education, renewable energy, job creation, early childhood development, rural development and the empowerment of women and the girl child.

Impumelelo is aiming to mainstream social innovation throughout South Africa

The Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre’s award is an independent awards programme in South Africa. The award’s end goal is to promote initiatives in civil society, the public and private sector, that improve the quality of the life of the poor in exceptional ways.

Who can apply for the Impumelelo Social Innovation Award?

All civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, social innovators who are finding solutions to the life of the poor. There are the following categories:

  • Social Entrepreneur (R50 000)
  • Platinum (R50 000)
  • Silver (R20 000)
  • Gold (R40 000)

  • Innovation
  • Poverty impact
  • Project effectiveness
  • Transparent and Accountable Financial Management
  • Sustainability
  • Replication

Impumelelo Social Innovation Award

Impumelelo is a South African non-profit established in 1999 to identify, reward and promote socially innovative projects that improve quality of life for the poor. Since then, it has awarded more than 300 innovative projects.
