Sometimes the best way to learn is to learn in your own pace and at a time that suits you best, especially if you are full-time employed, a busy entrepreneur or a parent. For that reason, MOOCS are great way to increase your knowledge of a certain area. On top of that, courses are often offered for free. Here a selection of upcoming courses that provide you with the basics of social entrepreneurship and social innovation.

1. Social Innovation MOOC (EN) – iversity

This MOOC is taught in english, self-paced and designed for people interested in understanding and/or designing societal change. It is an introductory course, which means you do not need to have prior knowledge in the topic.

You will learn what social innovations are and understand how they can help solve societal problems. You will get an overview of important literature and debates on social innovation. In addition to that, you will learn and apply methods to develop, implement and scale social innovations. Exercises will allow you to apply the methods, develop your own ideas and gather first-hand experiences.

2. Get started in Social Entrepreneurship: A practical Guide – Udemy

This course consists out of 22 lectures and 3 hours of video content. It is an introductory course to Social Entrepreneurship taught in english and teaches about how to start a business that makes a difference. You’ll gain access to leading tools, resources and business models for starting your own social enterprise. Costs for this course (with lifetime access) are €62.

3. Driving Adoption of Innovation at the Bottom of the Pyramid – NovoEd

This is a free course offered by Acumen that started already on 21. October 2015 – nonetheless you can still sign in and join. It is a course for global development professionals, aspiring or practicing social entrepreneurs who want their products or services to be adopted by bottom of the pyramid customers.

4. Lean Startup Principle for Social Impact – NovoEd

This 4-week course is also offered by Acumen. You will learn how to test, validate, and adapt your vision of change to ensure you’re creating the greatest impact and investing your time in something that truly meets your stakeholder’s and customer’s needs. It is ideal for people who want to start a new social enterprise or who are about to star a new program/initiative within an existing organisation.

5. Design Kit: The Course for Human-Centered Design – +Acumen

The is a seven-week  course that will introduce you to the concepts of human-centered design and how this approach can be used to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions for social change. It has been created to reach those who are brand new to human-centered design, so no prior experience required. You will work through the course with a group of 2-6 people, therefore it is recommended to form a team with people located in your city before starting the course.

6. Business Models for Social Enterprise – +Acumen

The course is designed for early stage social entrepreneurs with an idea or prototype for a product or service, but you still need to consider your business model.
